for larger version       Sanders Holds Immigration Initiative Conference Councilmember James Sanders Jr. held a press conference in front of his Laurelton office on the morning of April 5 to announce the launch of his immigration initiative. Sanders has allocated $150,000 to the Federation of African Caribbean and American Organization to set up immigration counseling and advocacy services free of charge to his constituents in the 31st District. The services are available Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at Sanders' District Office at 226-18 Merrick Boulevard in Laurelton. There will be free legal assistance by an attorney to prepare and file papers, and to accompany immigrants at court appearances and administrative hearings. Other services available include counseling and assistance with citizenship/naturalization, green cards/visa petitions, asylum assistance, employment authorization, legal assistance and immigrant juvenile status. The focus of the program is to enable immigrants to apply for permanent residency. "The diversity of my district represents America at its best! My district is in the heart of Queens, which is the most diverse county in the country, and it is my main concern that all my neighbors are able to benefit from the security that is offered by being an American citizen," Sanders said. "Having served in the military where the number one goal was defending my country, it is now time for me to continue defending my neighbors in the 31st district by giving them all the opportunity to stake their claim in this great country."
