Extend Student MetroCard Limits

City Council Member Joseph P. Addabbo Jr., a member of the Council's Transportation Committee, has called on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the New York City Department of Education to provide additional rides on Student MetroCards or Supplemental Student MetroCards, and to extend the valid time limits of the cards in order to enable students to participate in school-related and after-school activities.

The New York City Department of Education provides elementary and secondary school students with full-fare and half-fare MetroCards.

A full-fare Student MetroCard is restricted to three trips per school day on both subway and surface bus lines between the hours of 5:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. and a half-fare Student MetroCard is restricted to three trips per school day on surface transportation only. A special four-trip Student MetroCard can be obtained upon the principal's request.

Addabbo stated that many school-related extracurricular activities, such as sports programs, community service, tutoring, mentoring sessions and internships, may require a student to make more than three trips per day, occur beyond the 8:30 p.m. deadline, and/or occur on the weekends.

He noted that students participate in school-related extracurricular activities to gain enriching experiences, which contributes to their overall academic success.

"In order to encourage and facilitate greater involvement in positive after-school and other school-related activities, additional rides should be provided on Student MetroCards or Supplemental Student MetroCards, which should be issued to students upon presentation of proof of their active participation in such activities," said Addabbo, adding, "The time limits on usage of such cards should be extended in order to enable students to travel to and from activities later at night and on weekends."
