Thirty two students from Frederick Douglass Academy VI High School in Far Rockaway are on their way to Paris. Principal Linda Alfred, the students, three parents and three staff members will experience an up close and personal view of the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and other Parisian landmarks during Spring Break. Although the students had to pay their own way, FDA VI received generous donations from Dr. Lorraine Monroe of Replications, Inc., Jeremiah C. Gaffney's Funeral Home in Far Rockaway, staff members of Far Rockaway High School, Melvin Holley of St. John Baptist Church in Inwood, and Elder James Williams and the congregation of St. John's Baptist Church in Arverne. Frederick Douglass Academy VI, housed on the third floor of Far Rockaway High School, is a replica of Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, which was founded by Dr. Monroe in 1991. There are currently eight such academies throughout Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan and the Bronx. FDA VI follows the educational principles of its model, which includes a no-nonsense approach to schooling that demands parent involvement, school uniforms and strict adherence to the rules. FDA VI opened its doors in 2004 with an eager group of ninth graders and will have its first graduating class in 2008. One of the fundamental characteristics of all Frederick Douglass Academies is foreign travel to form authentic learning opportunities. Last year, FDA VI journeyed to Montreal, Canada. While in France, the students will utilize their two to three years of French lessons as they socialize with Parisians, order food and visit landmarks such as the famous art museum, the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. Students will keep a journal of their travels and will produce a DVD of their trip, with student and staff interviews included, upon their return. According to their principal, the FDA VI students will undoubtedly walk away with an invaluable lesson that reaches far beyond the walls of a classroom.
