Road Work Causes 'Monumental Traffic Jam'

A construction crew with a contract to mill Beach Channel Drive between Beach 92 Street and Beach 102 Street caused what one motorist, who spent nearly a half hour to go one block between Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Freeway, termed a "monumental traffic jam, the worst I've ever seen in Rockaway," on Thursday morning just before the 8 a.m. rush hour. The traffic jam on both Beach Channel Drive and Rockaway Beach Boulevard went from Beach 90 Street to Beach 73 Street with many motorists complaining to The Wave that they should have at least been forewarned about the tie-up. Police officers finally ordered the contractor to reopen the road at about 10 a.m. Here, a police vehicle (at right) rushes to an emergency as westbound traffic stands snarled on Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 88 Street.
