for larger version       Weed And Seed Report As a kid growing up in the Redfern Houses, and loving sports as I did, football season excited my hormones in an anticipation of the pick up games of neighborhood football with the guys. There was hardly a lack for bodies when it was game time, and the spirit of the atmosphere was one of fun. Competitive yes, but fun. The gatherings meant time away from trouble; the bad things that a male growing up in a housing development could find himself in. There were no weapons of destruction brought to the playing field, except those of a player's natural ability. The machismo was exhibited in trash talk and boasting, not murderous anger. It was that way when Redfern and the Forty projects came together to play each other. Everybody left the field after a game knowing who the better team was that day, but anticipating the next game, and bragging rights for the winning housing complex. Common kids, with a common love, displaying a common good. And truthfully because of this there really were no losers on any given day. Hammels, Ocean Bay, and all those developments that may be at war, challenge yourselves to the common good. There's no challenge in territorial violence, but in the exercise of restraint. It's easy to retaliate at someone's provocation, but the challenge is really in responding positively. To refuse to engage in violence is something special, just like the game of football being played by kids in the projects.
