A clerk working the night shift at an Arverne deli was shot in the head on Wednesday night when he didn't open the cash drawer quickly enough to suit a robber, police say.

According to police sources, an unidentified masked robber entered the Casa Blanca Deli at 70-03 Beach Channel Drive at about 8:58 p.m. on Wednesday and demanded money.

The clerk was reportedly slow to open the cash register and the robber shot him.

Police say that officers responding to a call of a robbery in progress found the unidentified 31-year-old victim with two gunshot wounds to his head.

Detectives from the 100 Precinct Squad are still looking for the shooter, who fled with an unspecified amount of cash.

The victim was removed to Jamaica Hospital, where he is listed in critical but stable condition.
