for larger version       Neilson Street Fire Victims Could Soon Retrieve Belongings
The victims of the massive fire that destroyed 1056 Nielson Street in Far Rockaway last month may soon be able to retrieve their belongings, Captain Brian McMahon, the commanding officer of the 101 Precinct, announced on Wednesday. McMahon said the building must first be shored up and then inspected by the Department of Buildings before its former residents can enter it. "They're renovating it now," he said at this month's precinct community council meeting. "We're looking to get all the families that were relocated to get their personal belongings out. "They have a work crew over there. They said another week. People who used to live in there will be able to go in there and take their personal belongings out and then, I don't want to say demolish the building - but there's a lot of water damage in there."
"For most of those people there's nothing left to take out," he continued. "Between all the water damage, the water freezing, the water damage because there's no ceilings, it's just a complete wash. Most of the apartments are completely destroyed. "From the third floor down may be salvageable, but the water damage is extensive," concluded McMahon.
