Hammel Playground Re-Do Hits A Little Hitch

The Department of Parks and Recreation is reconstructing the Hammel Playground on Rockaway Beach Boulevard. Play equipment has been removed and the park has been sealed (see photo), but work won't continue until the city agency decides how to use new funds allocated by a city council representative. A Parks spokesperson said the agency wants to do the project "in the most efficient manner" so that it can move at a faster pace. "At this time the schedule and design are still being discussed."
While some of the playground's benches remain, play equipment has been removed and some of the blacktop torn up.
Work has already begun at the Hammel Playground, but it will be a while before it is completed and the park reopens.
Another view of the now defunct playground shows fencing and wood guards put up around several trees.
