LWA Celebrates Mardi Gras Celebration
Sean Freese, Director of Technology, kicked off the celebration with a presentation about his experiences living in Louisiana until Hurricane Katrina displaced him and his family. He shared the history of the Mardi Gras tradition in New Orleans, which was adapted from a religious festival dating back to Roman Times, and traced its history from colonization through slavery ending in Post-Katrina Louisiana. Following his presentation the French and Italian Clubs cooked and served homemade traditional dishes, providing a festive atmosphere through music and decorations. "The nicest part about it was how we immersed the entire community into the world of Mardi Gras by replicating its sights and its sounds," said Dr. Steven Verolla, Foreign Language Chair, one of the event organizers.
