Hammels Man Gets Lucky As Attacking Pit Bull Slips On Ice

Thomas Churchwell says that he was minding his own business, walking to the One Stop grocery at 86-02 Rockaway Beach Boulevard at about 9 a.m. on February 19, when he noticed a pit bull dog standing nearby the doorway, growling at him. "I was frightened because the dog was very threatening," Churchwell told The Wave. He said that the dog charged him on the ice-covered sidewalk. The dog latched onto his leg but then slid on the ice and lost his traction. Churchwell managed to get into the store, where he called police and the storeowner called for an ambulance to look at his bleeding leg. He said that the young owner of the dog came and asked him if he was bitten by the dog. When he responded that he had, the man just grabbed the dog and walked away. Churchwell told The Wave that he put up signs warning other patrons of the store, but the owner came and tore them down. Churchwell was treated and released at the Peninsula Hospital Center. "They told me that I was lucky, that pit bulls latch on and don't let go. I guess the ice saved me a lot of pain." Pictured, Churchwell's leg the day after the attack.
