BKHS'Crockett Wins In 500th Game Milestone
By Elio Velez

To coach one high school basketball game is an achievement.

Cathy Crockett, the Breezy Point native and head coach of the Bishop Kearney varsity basketball Tigers has done it 500 times. It may be nothing new but the excitement in coaching the Brooklyn school still remains 19 seasons after she began.

In a 57- 49 win over Brooklyn/ Queens CHSAA rival Archbishop Molloy last Friday night, Marissa Maffei scored 16 points to lead Bishop Kearney.

"I probably didn't think I'd be coaching 20 years," Crockett told the Wave.

"But would I like to coach another 500 games? Maybe. God willing!!!," Crockett, who now has 328 wins and 173 losses, said laughing.

The 501st game was as successful to her previous milestone as Bishop Kearney pulled off a 46-43 road victory over Moorestown in Atlantic City, N.J. Maria Laterza scored 22 points and 10 rebounds and Caitlin Irwin chipped in 11 points.

Both were crucial to the Tigers comeback after Moorestown led by seven points heading into the fourth quarter.

Bishop Kearney continued their fine season as they improved to 18-3, and 8-2 in the league, which is second ahead of The Mary Louis Academy. The Lady Royals are 10-0 in the league and host Bishop Kearney today at 5:30 p.m.

If the Tigers win two out of their last games, including Christ the King, Bishop Ford and St. Edmund on Senior Night at the school Wednesday, Crockett could win 20 games in the regular season. It would be the first time the Tigers could achieve that mark since her inaugural 1987-1988 campaign.

The regular season will conclude on February 28 and the BQCHSAA Division I playoffs begin the first week of March.
