for larger version       St. Francis CYO Girls Triumph To Make Final Four Appearance The Girls Diocesan Quarterfinals were played this past weekend and St. Francis has advanced two of its teams into the Final Four. Team speed and an excellent collaborative effort swept the Novices past Our Lady of Snows 19-13. Meghan Atwood paced the offense while Casey McDade's defensive contributions were immeasurable. The Rookies also pulled together as one in their triumph over St. Thomas Apostle. Semi-finals will be on 2/24 and the Diocesan Championships are scheduled for 2/25. Times and opponents are not yet known. The Bantams dug an early hole but almost climbed out to make it three in the Final Four. Rallying from a nine point deficit, they closed within three with one minute remaining, but lost to St. Margaret 28-23, despite a great effort by all. The Pee Wee A's played one of their best games but also fell to St. Mary Winfield. The Intermediates were faced with a dilemma against St. Mary Gate of Heaven. They chose to aggressively defend Gate's outside shooters. While successful at shutting them down, Gate countered by going inside and prevailed to move on. It was the last CYO game for a fine group of young ladies who will have their swan song in the upcoming Peggy Boyle Tournament, which starts February 25 at St. Francis. The Boys Subnovice A's started the weekend with an early Saturday trip to St. Helen. John Boyle scored 10 and Alex Goldberg 6 with Mark Butigian, Ryan Olsen, and Ethan Ruiz completing the scoring. The Subnovice B's were busy with CYO games against St. Thomas More and St. Rose. They also won two games in the Gate of Heaven Tournament over St. Adalbert and St. Thomas More. High scorers include John O'Connor against St. Thomas More (1st game), James McElhatton against St. Rose, Christian Apice and Brian Ostrander against St. Adalbert, and Ryan Moran against St. Thomas More (2nd game). Also lighting the scoreboard were Joe Gallo, Thomas Glynn, and Matt DeCrescenzo. The Pee Wee A's won a pair, 22-18 over OLPH and 16-7 against St. Rose. Charles Gavigan, Michael Newman, and George Baroudas provided the highlights against OLPH. The St. Rose game was the Morgan Family Feud with Tommy Morgan and Tommy Lynch battling their cousins Eddie and Aidan Morgan as St. Francis prevailed. The Rookies beat St. Rose and the Intermediates handled St. Helen. The weekend ended where it began with St. Francis at St. Helen. In the latest installment of their series the Bantams battled their St. Helen rivals. Ryan Kilgallen and Connor Rayder were strong on the boards and Jack Hurley provided a commanding presence. Kevin Magee's buzzer-beating 3-pointer hit the backboard and rim before bouncing off to preserve a 24-22 win for St. Helen. There are no CYO games scheduled this weekend with the winter vacation beginning. However Boys playoffs will begin with all teams in action on 2/24-25 and of course the Girls Final Four. The Peggy Boyle Tournament will begin 2/25 and next week's Wave will have details. Check with your coaches for revised practice schedules.
