A proposal for Rockaway's first ever dog run could be in the works by the end of the month, according to our area's top Department of Parks and Recreation official. About 25 people showed up last Sunday for a meeting that was held by Parks to see if interest in a dog run remains among residents, according to Rockaway Parks Administrator Jill Weber. "We did get a core group that's interested in becoming active," Weber told The Wave. That's exactly what Parks has said it needs for a dog run to move forward. Helen Ho, a Queens representative for Partnerships for Parks, attended the meeting, because the group that takes the leash on the project will be responsible for proposing a location and working with Parks to make sure it remains a clean, safe place for canines and humans alike. Those who attended the meeting were able to tour five prospective sites, several of which are on Shore Front Parkway. While Freeway Park and a defunct shuffleboard court on Beach 104 Street and Shore Front Parkway were heavy contenders in the past, Weber said a new location on Shore Front seems to be gaining popularity. She declined to disclose that location because it has not been formally proposed yet. Weber said she thinks the process of drafting a proposal will begin at the next dog run meeting, which is scheduled to take place at the Beach 86 Street lifeguard shack on Sunday, February 25 at 2 p.m. Weber added that she was "very optimistic" that the peninsula's first dog run could soon be operating on a trial basis.
