St.Francis de Sales Christmas Tournament Moves Along

The St. Francis Christmas Tournament presented a heavy schedule of games this past weekend to complete the first week, before a two-day hiatus. The action finished with the St. Francis Blue eliminating the St. Francis Gold in the Sub-novice division in a game that went to the wire. St. Helen meets Our Lady of Hope. The loser will then face St. Francis Blue for the right to face off with the winner in the championship of the double elimination tournament.

In the Pee Wee division, Gate of Heaven handed SFDS Blue their first loss and next takes on SFDS Gold. The Blue has worked its way through the loser's bracket with a key win over St. Margaret and will go against the loser of the Gate of Heaven- SFDS Gold for a spot in the finals.

St. Francis Novice passed its first real test of the season by defeating a strong St. Andrew squad. Blessed Sacrament is next in the winner's bracket finals on Wednesday. St. Andrew and St. Adalbert are still alive in the loser's bracket, looking to get to Saturday's championship.

The St. Francis Bantams became the first team to secure a spot in Saturday's championship, as they won a thriller over Blessed Sacrament to start play on Sunday. Blessed Sacrament will have to beat a tough St. Thomas More squad for a second time, to get another shot at St. Francis.

Wednesday's highly anticipated matchup between the St. Francis and St. Helen Rookies has materialized as St. Francis beat St. Joseph/St. Thomas. St. Joseph/St. Thomas then beat Our Lady of Grace to keep alive. Regardless of the outcome of Wednesday's game, it is expected that St. Francis and St. Helen will square off again for the big prize on Saturday.

The Intermediate division is a peninsular affair with St. Francis and St. Thomas More ready to meet in the winner's bracket finals. Both need to be wary of a strong team from Our Lady of the Angelus, that lost an overtime heartbreaker to St. Thomas More, and then knocked out Our Lady of Grace. Despite the loss to St. Thomas, OLA has to be considered as equally likely as St. Francis and St. Thomas of wearing the champions' shirts on Saturday.

The Sub-novice championship begins Saturday's schedule at 10:00. Pee Wee is at 11:30 and Novice at 1:00. The St. Francis Cheerleaders will perform again at 2:00 after packing the house on Sunday. The Special Awards ceremony follows immediately after. Games resume with the Bantam Championship at 3:00 followed by the Rookies at 4:30 and the Intermediates wrap it all up at 6:00. We hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and look forward to wishing you all a Happy New Year at the 23rd Annual St. Francis de Sales Christmas Tournament
