Stella Maris' varsity and junior varsity basketball teams tipped off their Brooklyn/Queens CHSAA Division league schedule with a win over St. Agnes.

Last Monday, the varsity was defeated by St. Saviour. SM's junior squad returned the favor by beating the Pandas in the nightcap.

The Stella Maris varsity team returns Kathleen Haggerty (captain), Clare Carey (co-captain) and junior Stephanie Quick (co-captain). Also returning are Eliana Howell, Melissa Hahn, Dorothy LaBattaglia, Michelle Santoro and Stephanie Van Rossem. The rookies added to this year's squad are juniors Allison Censoprano and Kellee LaPacki.

The senior squad looks to regroup while staying in the hunt for the BQGCHSAA Division Championship. The loss of Alexa Rosella (1,000 point scorer) and Tara Gleason (three-point extraordinaire) has left a 30-point offensive hole that the team needs to fill.

In addition, control of the boards will be a point of emphasis for a team known for scoring the points via the fast-break. Finally, the overall defensive team effort needs to improve for this year's team to achieve their Championship goal.

The Stella Maris junior varsity team returns four players, has added on six new players, and one new coach.

Ellen Cahill McDonagh (SM Class of '93 and a former 1,000-point scorer) graciously accepted the position when Coach Richie Knott's work schedule precluded him from continuing in the position. the entire Stella Maris school community welcomes Mrs. McDonagh and wishes her much success!

The Flippers' success has started early, as the JV is 2-0. Returning members Chelsea Flores, KerryClare Gleason, Dionesia Riviere and Amanda Plunkett are joined by Amanda Ogden, Ashly Keane, Allison Mc- Govern, Caitlyn Mammes, Jennifer Miller and Shannon O'Connor.

A terrific inside/out game and phenomenal rebounding have placed the junior varsity team right where they should be.

Flipper Footnotes: The teams travel to Fontbonne Hall Academy to take on the Bonnies on January 4; the JV game starts at 4:30 and the varsity takes place at 6 p.m.

Then on Saturday, January 5, it's off to Long Beach High School for another double header starting at 12 and 2 (JV).

The third game in four days will be at home on January 7 as the Lady Flippers host St. Edmund.

The JV game is first at 4:15 p.m. followed by the varsity at 5:45 p.m. Great to see so many alums at the games.

Now, we need you in to scrimmage the team. KLP; you sure you don't want a salad with those chicken nuggets? MH; no one in my house gets a gold fish! LOL.Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all players and families!
