SFDS Basketball Teams Bring Good Holiday Cheer

The St. Francis de Sales Pee Wee girls each had thrillers this week as the CYO season heads into its last weekend before the Christmas break.

The Gold took on Sacred Heart of Glendale. The stifling defense of Therese Gallagher and Ryan Ward kept this one alive. Gallagher found Shannon Rochelle, who was fouled and made the game-winning free throw, as St. Francis won 8-7.

Gallagher scored 4 points and Jenna McCann had 3 points. The Blue came out on the short end of a 6-5 decision against St. Margaret in overtime. The Bantams fell to Our Lady of Hope while the Rookies beat Our Lady of Grace as Taylor Butigian scored 16, Catherine Murphy had 9, Erin Blum had 4 and Kristin Henschel scored 2.

The Intermediate boys held off a late charge by Our Lady of Grace to win 64- 51. Chris Tsatsis poured in 22 points while Pat Kilgallen added 8 and a strong dose of defense.

Billy Buckley, Danny Donahue, Jon Maranga, and Ryan Meade netted 6 apiece, but it was the inspirational play of Liam Reen that led the team.

Reen continued to play after a firsthalf injury that was later diagnosed as a separated wrist. He will be out of action for a while but not out of his coaches and teammates' hearts.

The Bantams won twice. After watching a 14-point lead against St. Rose evaporate to 2, Michael Buckley made a key steal, basket, and two free throws, as St. Francis regained its composure to win, 35-28. Patrick Cashin and Dennis Barnes also made key baskets in the final run. Eamonn Gavigan scored 8 points and Dylan Evans had 6. Buckley scored 14 and Gavigan chipped in with 10 points as they had an easier time against St. Stans.

Niall Reen and Patrick Cashin split the point guard duties and both controlled the offense effectively. Liam Lachner and Alex Moule dominated the boards. The Novices were led by Conor Ryan in a win over OLPH and earlier beat St. Helen, as Anthony Scotto was player of the game.

The Pee Wee Boys faced off against each other and stayed tight through three quarters. Kyle Connolly scored 4 of his game-high 6 points in the final quarter as the Gold won, 12-5. Alex Goldberg, Mark Butigian and Matt LaSorsa added 2 each for the Gold. Ryan Moran, Matt DeCrescenzo, and John O'Connor scored for the Blue.

The teams will hit the road for this weekend's CYO contests as the annual St. Francis Christmas Tournament settles in for a two-week run at St. Francis gym, beginning this Saturday.

The tournament, under the direction of Marty and Keith Andresen, features 37 teams from Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island playing in 6 divisions. Games take place every weekend beginning on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. and weeknights at 6:00 p.m. The tournament runs through championship Saturday on December 29, with a break on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

In addition to the exciting games, there will be 50/50 raffles, performances by the cheerleaders, lots of food and of course, lots of Christmas music. Enjoy a holiday tradition at the St. Francis gym.
