In September of 2011, the grand tradition and legendary history of Far Rockaway High School will fade into history. The school, which was founded in 1897, and graduated Nobel Peace Prize winners and famous sports stars like Nancy Lieberman and John Warren will become a distant memory. More ... At 11 a.m. on September 8, Devon Moore was feeling quite amped to step onto the field for the Beach Channel football team. Thirty minutes later, Moore was inserted at wide receiver and ran a pattern in the middle of the field. Moore, a junior, missed the catch but just half a second later, Campus Magnet safety Datalia Holness didn't miss in making contact. More ... After an unbelievable playoffs series this past weekend the teams are set for the 4th Annual Stop the Violence Basketball Tournament "Championship Saturday". In the 14 and under division, the game every body wants to see will be the Da B.K. Ballers (9-2) going against Team $how & Prove (9-2) at 3:30 p.m.Team $how & Prove will be looking to win back-to-back championships. More ... Senior swingman Arthur Robertson, the Far Rockaway native who starred igh School, was named Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball honorable mention on Monday, December 3. A win and a tie, in the last weekend of the CYO soccer season was not enough to secure a playoff position for the St. Francis de Sales Sixth grade girls (team 1).But that did not mean their season was over. On a sunny but cold Saturday afternoon, they faced-off against their most meaningful opponent... their parents. More ... The Mary Louis Academy competed in the N.S.C.H.S.G.A.A. Swimming Championships at Eisenhower Park on November 10 and 11, as the team secured a fourth place finish. The members of the team who represented from Rockaway were: junior Ashley McLoughlin (Breezy Point), senior Casey McCormack (Belle Harbor), sophomore Elizabeth Woods (Belle Harbor), and senior Devin Nuszer (Belle Harbor). The Student Athletic Scholarship Support Program are proud to announce that with the support of Councilman James Sanders Jr., the Rockaway Sports Association (RSA), and the New York City Housing Authority's (NYCHA) lacrosse program, our young-student athletes will have the ability to pursue their academic and athletic goals. More ... At the World Famous Apollo Theater, Far Rockaway's own Stan's Pepper Steppers once again took many top honors at the 16th Annual Double- Dutch Holiday Classic on Sunday, December 2. More ... John Corry, a Rockaway resident, was inducted into the Manhattan College Hall of Fame at an athletic award dinner held on December 1. Corry, who was joined by family and friends and his teammates, broke the world record in 1961, when he ran the 2-mile relay at the Milrose Games in Madison Square Garden. Corry ran track at Manhattan for 4 years by winning many medals against tough schools like Dartmouth and Army. More ... Congratulations go to the young football Bears, who were victors last month in the 2007 Hurricanes Pee Wee Jr. Championship. In the final game of the season on November 17 at Aviator Field, the Bears won a tough contest against the Cowboys, 22-20. Both teams had Rockaway residents on their rosters. The Bears had a great season and everyone on the team is looking forward to another terrific season in 2008. More ... Giving mothers and their children a chance to spend quality time together, the Sorrentino Recreation Center hosted the 16th Annual Mommy & Me Double Dutch Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend. More ... On Thanksgiving Day, Xavier High School lined up to play Fordham Prep in a contest that has come to be known as the Turkey Bowl. The traditional rivalry between the two Jesuit schools dates back to 1886. The 2007 edition was played for the first time at the Aviator Sports Complex before a standing room only crowd on perfect day. Once again the game proved to be a classic. More ... On Sunday, December 2, the Bonnies, of Fontbonne Hall Academy met their long time arch-rivals, the Tigers of Bishop Kearney High School. The sport was swimming; the venue was a dual meet at the Saint Francis College pool. More ... It was Pee Wee Day at St. Francis on Saturday as the basketball schedule began the SFDS girls facing off against St. Margaret in back-to-back games. The Golden Girls dug a hole in the first half, but held St. Margaret Ateam scoreless after intermission, to win 15- 9, and remain unbeaten. More ... At a recent Karate Tournament at York College in Jamaica, Queens, Justin Pine garnered the Grand Championship Kumite (sparring) Trophy. Pine persevered through his lightweight division to take on and defeat the heavyweight winner. An assistant instructor at World Champions Karate Center, Pine is pictured to the right of the coveted 7- inch trophy. More ... |
