Speed And Power Key SFDS CYO Basketball Victories
The St. Francis de Sales Subnovice girls are nearing the halfway point in the CYO basketball season. Last Saturday against St. Stans, SFDS' Leila Sturgis played outstanding defense while Maria DiCarlo excelled with her dribbling and passing. On Sunday, SFDS battled against St. Mary Winfield. Molly Breslin ran the court for St. Francis like a track star, pacing the team with her speed while Nicole Gibson and Emma Meade contributed great passing.
The Pee Wee Gold beat Our Lady of Hope, 22-6, as the winning team was led by Jenna McCann with 10 points. Lauren Guidarelli added 8 points, Johanna Sullivan and Jackie Gallagher each added 2 points. Shannon Moroney played well on the boards. Allison Tipaldo and Therese Gallagher played awesome defense.
The Novices played a tug of war with St. Mary Winfield and led 4-1 at the half on the strength of baskets by Kayla Kilgallen and Emma Michaels.
In the second half, Kayla Rayder and Erin Klein stepped up their rebounding. Mary Ellen Woods and Courtney Blum controlled the offense and Cassie Moriarty, Kim Sluyk and Kerri Rose Brennan kept the ball moving as St. Francis won, 10-5.
The Intermediates, led by Kara Ryan, Maegen Reed and Deirdre Ray, won easily against St. Helen.
The Boys Subnovice Gold faced off with Our Lady of Grace. SFDS' Jonathan Machado excelled on both offense and defense. Matt Schonfeld led the offense while James McManus and John Said anchored the 'D' and Peter Tuffey and Mike Piccone patrolled the paint grabbing the lion's share of rebounds. The Pee Wee Blue handled St. Helen, 14-8, as John O'Connor scored 8 points, Thomas Glynn, Joe Gallo, and Matt DeCrescenzo added 2 points each. The Gold squad won for the second week against St. Rose. John Boyle led with 6 points, Ryan Olsen and Alex Goldberg scored 4, and Shane Malloy, Eoin Reen, and Mark Butigan added two each.
The SFDS Christmas Basketball Tournament starts on December 15. Marty and Keith Andresen promise this will be the best tournament yet.
