Young Dolphins May Go Through Growing Pains

By Elio Velez

Beach Channel boys' basketball coach Jim Malone used some practice time last Wednesday to get to know his team better. The roster will be made up of many new arrivals and few returning players for the PSAL AA 2007-08 campaign.

Malone has more than 20 years of coaching experience in high school and in college to implement what the gameplan will be this season.

His long talk after practice was over was to preach positivism and patience for this year after the Dolphins was beaten on the road by Benjamin Cardozo, 76-43, last Tuesday in the first game of the PSAL AA season.

Beach Channel doesn't have the services of Davon Saxon, who averaged 20 points and 10 rebounds for a Dolphins team last year that finished with a 12- 6 record and third place in a competitive Queens division.

Saxon was a four year player and the lynchpin of a senior laden lineup which included Rolando Beckford and Peter Roberts, that provided scoring and rebounds.Malone hopes that his returnees from last year in Thompson, forward Corey Thomas and starting point guard Yaquis Moss can eventually make an impact this year..

"This is the youngest lineup I've ever had and the least experience for sure," Malone said. "It'll take time. This year, we might surprise some people by the middle of the year."
