Sex Offenders Roaming The Streets Of Rockaway
A total of 48 registered sex offenders
Rockaway Peninsula, according to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, which provides a public online database of all criminals convicted of sex-related crimes.
Many of these criminals convicted of rape and various types of sexual assault towards children are out on the streets of Rockaway. They may present a serious threat towards women, men, and children of all ages. The 48 moderate to-high-risk sexual predators are all men and span across the entire Rockaway Peninsula, according to the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services website.
The Wave has compiled, for your awareness, a complete photo list of Level 2 and 3 sex offenders in each of the Rockaway zip codes, according to the Criminal Justice Services directory. Their names, risk levels, aliases, filed addresses, as well as conviction and victim information are listed.
Nineteen of the men are tagged with a Level 3 risk, which means the courts have determined they present the highest risk to society to re-commit the sexual related crimes of which they have been convicted.
In addition to the 19 high-risk offenders, Rockaway is home to 29 more men who are classified at Level 2, which means they continue to present a moderate risk to commit sexual offenses again, but are not deemed as dangerous to the community as Level 3 offenders. In many cases throughout New York, the victim is a minor and in Rockaway it is no different, as 60 percent of the convicts on our list have committed sexrelated crimes against children 16 years old or younger.
Rockaway has seen a rise in the total number of sex offenders living on the peninsula, but has also seen a slight drop of level 3 offenders from the 24 listed in 2006, down to 19 as of this date, leaving the remaining 29 as level 2 convicts. Fifty percent of the total offenders on the peninsula reside in the confines of zip-code 11691, an increase of four from last year's report published by The Wave.
Readers of The Wave should know that state and local law enforcement authorities, including the 100 and 101 Precincts in Rockaway, monitor convicted sex offenders and the NYPD has a unit committed solely to this cause.
Information on New York State's Level 2 and 3 sex offenders is available online and is listed according to zip code. Level 2 and 3 offenders are completely accessible to the public, due to the risk they present being out on the streets. However, locating Level 1 offenders, who are deemed low-risk, still requires the name, a specific address or other, typically confidential, information such as a Social Security number, in order to have them located.
Information on state-wide sex offenders is available free of charge on the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services website, www.CriminalJustice.State.NY.US or by calling 800-262-3257. The state promotes the responsible sharing of sex offender information "to ensure the safety of yourself, your family and your community," according to the website.
