SFDS CYO Basketball Teams Display Winning Style
Amidst the backdrop and excitement of the SFDS CYO Soccer playoffs, the CYO Basketball season for the St. Francis teams continued last weekend.
The Boys Subnovice Blue team was locked in a close battle with St. Stans in the first half.
SFDS once again heated up in the second half and rolled to a victory behind Matt Coletta, Teddy Stathis, Jack Watt, and Kyle Hoffman.
The Pee Wee Gold bested Nativity 14-6 as John Boyle and Mark Butigian scored 4 points apiece, and Kyle Connolly, Ethan Ruiz, and Eoin Reen each added 2.
Everyone scored as the Bantams cruised past Our Lady of Grace. Michael Buckley led with 12 points and Dylan Evans scored 6. Alex Moule and Eamonn Gavigan made the offense click with their interior passing.
The Girls Pee Wee Gold jumped out to a quick first quarter lead, only to fall behind at the half.
Great defense, particularly by Therese Gallagher, spurred them on in the second half to beat Gate of Heaven, 25-14. Jenna McCann and Shannon Rochelle scored 8 points each. Therese Gallagher added 5 points and sister Jackie scored 4.
The Novices beat OLMM as Kayla Kilgallen and Emma Knox led the scoring with many easy layups. Serena Yanello and Mary Ellen Woods excelled in all facets of the game. Courtney Blum and Meredith Connelly were outstanding on defense, and Erin Klein hauled in many rebounds. Kim Sluyk once again showed off her dribbling and passing skills. The team would like to wish Happy Birthday to Kayla K. and Serena Y.
The Intermediates won twice with solid defense at the core of both victories. Casey Collins and Maegen Reed were the high scorers in a 40-26 win over St. Stans. Kathryn Brown and Ashley Raaf took the honors as they beat Gate of Heaven, 35-25. Shannon Dinnerman and Deirdre Munday displayed excellent interior passing to set up many baskets for their teammates.
