H.S.Notebook:BCHS Wins;Peninsula Volleyball Teams Battle For Division

By Elio Velez

Taking care of business has been the mantra for the Beach Channel boys' soccer team all season.

In the first round of the PSAL 'B' playoffs, Beach Channel didn't let Art&Design have any chance of upending their chase for the championship.

Last Tuesday afternoon, Beach Channel was dominant as Felix Luna scored two goals and Marlon Velasquez continued his midfield maestro in a 5-0 victory at home.

Velasquez had 2 assists and scored on a left-footed 25-yard goal in the second half. He departed the game with a left shoulder injury but will play on Friday in the second round against Prospect Heights.

Once freshman striker Andy Martinez scored on a third-minute goal in the first half for a 1-0 lead, Beach Channel were well on their way to victory. Christopher Frey added the other Dolphins goal.

Luna, a junior, scored two goals in the first half. It was the first time in his career that the midfielder scored twice in a game. "It feels great. I think we're on a championship run," Luna said.

On Friday, November 2, the Dolphins will host their second round game against Brooklyn rival Prospect Heights Campus at 3:30 p.m.

The PSAL Brooklyn North B divisional champions easily handled Environmental Studies High School, 9-1, last Tuesday. Slawomir Wloch says his teammates are playing well at the right time.

"The whole team has that confidence this year. We love the game and we love to win. That's what we do."

BCHS, FRHS Battle For Title

Far Rockaway and Beach Channel sealed a tie for first place in the PSAL 'B10' Division last Tuesday in the final game of the girls' volleyball regular season.

Both teams tied with a 5-3 record and will battle in a one-game playoff to decide who wins the division title. That game took place at presstime at Far Rockaway High school.

The winner will advance to the PSAL B League Citywide Tournament Of Champions at Seward Park in Manhattan on Sunday morning. In the first of a doubleheader at Beach Channel High School, Far Rockaway upped their record to 5-3 with a 25-15, 25-23 victory over August Martin.

For an hour, the Seahorses were on top of the division by themselves. Beach Channel needed a victory to ensure the tie and went three grueling sets with Campus Magnet before winning 25-22, 20-25 and 25-18 to force a playoff.

"We know that today was one of our best games. We were just so amped and so hyper, if we didn't win this game, it wouldn't have been so good," Beach Channel's Christina Salinas said.
