Celebrate The Harvest: Go Pumpkin Picking With The Family!
Most of the time, I share with you ideas and projects for your garden, but today, I'd like to share an experience that I had last November at the "garden" of White Post Farms, with my family. This farm is about an hour and twenty minutes from Rockaway, and is one of the best places I have found for pumpkin picking. When arriving at White Post Farms, there are a small section of potted mums and seasonal decorations for the home. There are a few stages set up, with occasional shows for the children, acted out by costumed staff. You can take a hayride, sit for a magic show, or visit the petting zoo. They even have a comedy show for the kids, which is equally entertaining for the adults.
If you get hungry, stop over at the outdoor picnic area for a quick bite. They have pizza, hot dogs, fries, and some other finger foods. I am not so sure if they have the "stuff-your-ownscarecrow" section this year, but it was pretty popular with the children. And finally - what my father would think of as "best of all" - they have piles of pumpkins on a grassy lawn. It's not just the pumpkin picking that he would have liked, it's the idea that the kids stayed clean, and there was no mud dragged into his car, as there would be if we picked from the vine.
The only thing missing to celebrate the harvest is apple picking, but who needs apples when you can get a hot apple pie, freshly baked at the farm? Mmmmm! It smells so good; you'll wish you had a fork for the car ride home.
I share this experience with you because I found it to be memorable for the children and adults alike. It is a funfilled day packed with entertainment and activities of all sorts. I hope it hasn't changed much from last year, because it is sure to be a good time. There is a small admission, and their prices are not inexpensive, but not so unreasonable for a great day out! There are some other pumpkin farms not too far from home that can be a lot of fun as well. They may feature different things, like corn mazes, face painting, or potato sack races. Wherever you decide to go, just make sure you bring a camera, choose a really beautiful day to spend outdoors, and carry on a tradition that the family can share together - generation after generation.
