Dolphins Three-Peat PSAL Queens 'B'Division Title
Dominic Stanco knew what was coming. He had a hint his Beach Channel players were going to do something to their coach.
Last Tuesday, Stanco was on the sidelines watching the Beach Channel Dolphins cement a tie for the PSAL 'B1' Division championship in a 4-0 win over Richmond Hill on the sidelines.
Marlon Velasquez scored three goals to add to his season total of 14. The senior striker has connected for nine goals in the last five games of the season.
"I call him 'Marlon the Magician'," Stanco said. "The players work together and they send the ball to him. He finds a way to finish."
The players then surprised Stanco by soaking him with a water celebration that was the result of the Dolphins finishing 9-0-3, tying for first place with John Adams.
Beach Channel should be positioned for a #1 playoff seeding because of their titanic three-game battle this season with John Adams.
Each game resulted in a tie and a 3-3 tie on October 19 at John Adams could not decide who would solely win the division.
Every contest has been a tight but well-played game. Beach Channel had a lost a 2-0 lead and were down 3-2 on Samuel Archer's second half goal. The Dolphins though persevered in the 30th minute as Velasquez equalized with a goal in the rainy conditions and came out with a 3-3 tie. Perseverance is a trait Stanco has appreciated all-year from his team. They graduated five key starters including Erik Rengifo, who appeared on the U.S. National Under- 18 team this past summer.
"They have way exceeded my expectations seeing what we have done against (John) Adams this year," Stanco said. "The younger guys have the confidence now. They know what to expect out there on that field."
Beach Channel will host a first round playoff game on Tuesday, October 29 at 2:30 p.m. The seeding meeting to determine the PSAL 'A' and 'B' playoffs took place at press time. Far Rockaway ended their season at 2-9.
