Historical Views of the Rockaways

A Rare Look at the Beach in Neponsit, Rockaway Beach, N.Y. in the 1920s
From The Rockaway Museum Commentary by Emil Lucev,Curator Dedicated To The Memory Of Leon S.Locke

This rare photograph of the beachfront in Neponsit, depicts the exclusivity of this portion of the Rockaway Beach peninsula from its very beginnings, in the Queens Borough of New York City.

Old-fashioned bathing lines have been installed for local beachgoers, and they can be counted using only the fingers on one hand!

Judging by the marine growth on the pilings, from which the safety lines are suspended, it is low tide - with little wind and slight wave action! The location for the photo, as stated in a land sale advertisement of the time, was Beach 145 Street.
