2007 First Amendment Essay Contest

Wave To Participate In Judging Entries

The New York Press Association Foundation is sponsoring its second annual First Amendment essay contest, for 11th and 12thgrade high school students in New York State.

Designed to foster knowledge and understanding of the First Amendment, the statewide competition offers entrants a chance to win money for college - a firstplace $10,000 prize, plus $250 second place and $100 third-place prizes.

Local students can access the contest through The Wave, a member of the NYPA. Editors at The Wave will participate in judging the local entries and will choose a local winner.

The tiered contest requires entrants to submit an essay (maximum 500 words) to The Wave or a local, participating newspaper. Local newspapers judge entries using the NYPA scoring form and each top-rated entry is printed in the local paper and forwarded for judging to determine the $10k prize winner.

NYPA Foundation board members and staff will select the statewide winners.

The topic: Interpret the First Amendment or one of the five guaranteed by the Amendment and discuss the role it plays in American life.
