Bridge Work Changes Bus Routes

QM16, QM17, Q21 and Q53 Routes Affected
By Miriam Rosenberg

The MTA Bus Company has posted several changes to Rockaway area bus routes as a result of MTABridges and Tunnels closing a northbound ramp to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge from Cross Bay Parkway at Beach 94 Street.

The bus lines affected are the QM16, QM17, Q21 and Q53.

Except for the noted changes, these buses will travel along Beach 98 Street to Beach Channel Drive using the Beach Channel Drive ramp to the bridge.

QM16 passengers who use the Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 96 Street stop going to Manhattan, can board at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 100 Street. Southbound QM16 and QM17 buses will continue along the regular route.

Northbound Q21 and Q53 bus riders who use stops between Beach 98 and Beach 94 Streets can now board at Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 100 Street or Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 101 Street. Southbound buses for these two lines will remain on their normal routes.

As previously reported in The Wave, the bridge has entered a new phase of a three-year, $56.9 million rehabilitation of the 37-year old deck and the Rockaway ramps.

Two northbound lanes will remain open during morning rush hours, with additional closures possible during off-peak hours. One southbound land is also closed.

The bus changes took effect October 8 and will remain in effect until further notice. The ramps will remain closed to traffic until the weekend before Memorial Day 2008.
