Misconstrued View

Dear Editor,

It is most unfortunate that Mr. Schwach chose to compare Jewish Star publisher Meyer Fertig with the infamous Nazi leaders. It is, indeed, an insult to every Jewish martyr who died during the holocaust. Most died because they were Orthodox Jews. The comparison lacks any sense of proportionality.

It is true Mr. Fertig did state some silly opinions, but it was hardly enough to provoke such a hysterical response.

Following are retorts to the various charges Mr. Schwach accuses the Orthodox community of perpetrating.

The editor wants to see Jewish assimilation. Want to know about the ten lost Hebrew tribes?- they disappeared because they were assimilated. Our Jewish community is shrinking because of assimilation and intermarriages. Assimilation is the enemy of one's faith, tradition and culture.

Mr. Schwach needs an assist in American history. Who were the original settlers? The pilgrims, the Quakers, the Shakers, and Roger Williams in Rhode Island. America is host to different religious community settlements - Pennsylvania Dutch, the Mormons, etc. The Orthodox Jews have their enclave in Williamsburg, Boro Park, New City area, and the Five Towns. Sects prefer to live in their own communities so they can practice their traditional faith and customs. That falls under the banner of freedom of religion.

The editor worries that the Orthodox shop in Jewish-owned stores. Of course they do. They shop in stores which happen to be owned by Orthodox businessmen. The stores carry foods and merchandise which cater to the needs and choices of their clientele, usually in a much broader koshered capacity than a super market, which must satisfy a more diverse clientele. The same applies to the clothing stores. Orthodox women prefer more modest dress rather than high style daring fashion.

The separation of Jewish students attending parochial schools is one of the ways families have of assuring their children remain faithful to their religious traditions. In attacking Jewish parochial schools, in essence he is also attacking the Catholic Church- operators of the largest parochial school system in America.

However, the most pathetic Schwach action, was attacking Orthodoxy just before the most important and Holy Jewish holidays. Unless Mr. Schwach is seeking to destroy The Wave, he'd best just edit the news. If the controversy grows further, advertisers may begin to fall away.
