Cross Bay Bridge Undergoing Rehabilitation

The Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge enters its newest stage of rehabilitation on October 8, with the closure of a northbound lane. Two lanes will remain open during morning rush hours and additional lane closures may occur, intermittently, during off-peak hours. The walkway will remain open to the public throughout this work period. One southbound lane is already closed for construction.

In addition, the northbound ramp toward Broad Channel, at the intersection of Rockaway Freeway at Beach 94 Street, and the southbound ramp toward Riis Park - Beach Channel Drive West, will be closed to traffic until the weekend before Memorial Day 2008. Local detours to the remaining three ramps will be implemented during these ramp closures.

The three-year, $56.9 million project centers on reconstructing the 37- year-old deck of the Cross Bay Bridge and its Rockaway ramps, which have weathered decades of use by 7.3 million vehicles each year, in the corrosive saltwater environment.
