Beach Channel High School Wrapup:Grand Street Shutout Dolphins

By Elio Velez

Beach Channel sought refuge at home last Saturday afternoon, after being on the receiving end of a 35-0 defeat to Campus Magnet in the first week of the PSAL season.

Against the visiting Grand Street Campus Wolves, the Dolphins could not find the winning formula, for the second week in a row. Grand Street used their running game to chalk up 233 total yards on the ground and cruised to a 22-0 victory.

Beach Channel, which had emphasized their running game as a key to victory, could only manage a total of 23 yards on the ground. RB Turran Rhodes gained only 18 yards on 13 carries.

Key penalties and mistakes also cost the Dolphins; the visitors capitalized with their running attack. Lehkem Rose gained 135 yards and scored a touchdown.

Brian Mackey and Jeremiah Brown each scored a touchdown for the Wolves, who improved to 2-0 on the season. "We're a young team and we just know that we can't make mistakes," Beach Channel assistant coach Carlos Flores said.

"They (Grand Street) just executed better."

The Dolphins' record fell to 0-2 and they'll have to stop the high flying William E. Grady Falcons (2-0), who defeated Long Island City 42-29 last week. The Coney Island-based school will host Beach Channel on Sunday at 11:30 a.m.

Rey Named ACC Player of The Week

Former Bayside High School star and Far Rockaway native, Vincent Rey, was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Football Player for the Week, as the Duke Blue Devils sophomore linebacker helped his team defeat previously unbeaten Northwestern last Saturday.

Rey recorded 11 tackles and was part of a Duke defense that stopped Northwestern twice within the Blue Devils' 15-yard line in the fourth quarter. The Blue Devils (1-2) held off Northwestern to win their first game of the season, 20-14.

Soccer

Christopher Frey was a goal-scoring machine for Beach Channel as the senior notched four goals as his team secured their first victory over the year, a 5- 0 rout of the Richmond Hill Lions.

The Dolphins (1-0-1) will host the first of three PSAL B matchups with Far Rockaway (1-1) on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. The Seahorses lost, 4-0, to John Adams last Tuesday.

Stella Maris will take on St. Saviour on Friday, September 21 at 4 p.m. at Fort Tilden. The Lady Flippers will travel to St. Agnes on September 24 and visit St. John's Prep at Con Ed Field on September 26.
