Meeks honored the dedication and sacrifices of the Sixth Congressional District veterans and returning soldiers and their families at an "Oldies but Goodies Bar-B-que" at the St. Albans Veterans Administration Campus in St Albans.

The event co-sponsored by the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce included various activities and performances from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, local performer's Public School 30 Dance Troupe, Silver Fox and a spectacular children's magic rounded out the fun.

The event was attended by a wide range of elected officials and community leaders including Congressman Anthony Weiner; New York State Minority Leader Malcolm A. Smith, New York State Senator, Shirley Huntley; Assembly Member's Vivian Cook, Audrey I. Pheffer and William Scarborough; and New York City Council Member James Sanders

Congressman Meeks stated, "To all of the families and veterans here today- solider, sailor, airmen, marines, Coast Guardsmen- thank you for your courage, your strength, character and enduring power of example."

Meeks continued, "You are patriots, one and all. And the Sixth Congressional District as well as America owes you a debt of gratitude that words cannot repay. Men and women who fought for our freedom and liberty abroad should not have to fight their own government at home for the veterans benefits to which they are entitled and which they earned through their service. I pledge to continue to work diligently along with my colleagues in Congress to make sure our veterans and military families receive the benefits they deserve.

Today we as a community renew our promise to fulfill our sacred obligations to our veterans and families who have sacrificed so much so that we can live free. May God bless our men and women in uniform.

May God bless our veterans and your families. And May God bless the United States of America."
