MTA Bus Releases Extended QM16 Schedule

The MTABus Company has released a schedule for the expanded QM-16 express bus service it promised last month. The service, which has started at Beach 116 Street since the company took over the public bus companies in 2006, will begin at Beach 147 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard beginning Tuesday, September 4.

The expanded service comes as the result of requests from commuters who live west of Beach 116 Street, said Thomas J. Savage, the president of the company, in a letter to Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer notifying her of the change. "In response to recent community requests, MTA Bus will be extending the Queens terminus of the QM16 to Neponsit to provide direct peak period express bus access to the residential community along Rockaway Beach Boulevard between 116 Street and Beach 147 Street."

Starting Tuesday, September 4, those commuters heading to Manhattan can board the QM16 at the following intersections along Rockaway Beach Boulevard: Beach 147 Street, Beach 141 Street, Beach 135 Street, Beach 127 Street, Beach 122 Street, Beach 115 Street, Beach 105 Street and Beach 95 Street, at which point the bus goes over the Cross Bay Bridge to the mainland.

Commuters returning to Rockaway can exit the QM16 at these intersections along Rockaway Beach Boulevard: Beach 95 Street, Beach 115 Street, Beach 122 Street, Beach 126 Street, Beach 135 Street, Beach 141 Street and Beach 147 Street.

In addition, the bus stop on the southwest corner of Beach 116 Street will be moved to Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 115 Street for safety reasons, said Victor Lee, the Principal Transportation Planner for the bus company. Except for those changes, the QM16 route remains the same. There are no changes to the QM17 route.

Under the new schedule, the express buses will leave the new terminus at Beach 147 Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard at 6:27 a.m., 6:47 a.m., 7:07 a.m. 7:27 a.m. and 7:47 a.m. Those buses will reach the final Manhattan stop at 57 Street and Third Avenue at 20-minute intervals beginning at 7:45 a.m.

Buses will leave Manhattan in the afternoon at 20 minutes intervals beginning at 4:40 p.m., for the return runs to Rockaway.

The complete schedules can be found at the MTA Bus website, www.mta.info/busco/schedules/index.html.
