Channel Residents Peek Into The Past

A typical, early 1900s, Mardi Gras scene: residents celebrate in front of the decorated houses. A typical, early 1900s, Mardi Gras scene: residents celebrate in front of the decorated houses. The Broad Channel Historical Society is giving locals a chance to glimpse into the past during their open house at St. Virgilius School on September 2.

The society's collection, usually located at the local library, includes Mardi Gras pictures, banners, trophies and articles on the 40-year, land-purchasing struggle. The 2008 Broad Channel Historical Calendar, complete with high-tide times, will be on sale as well.

"It's sort of a mini historical day for all the people from out of town who return for the Mardi Gras weekend," Historical Society chairperson Barbara Toborg said in a press release.

The open house will take place from noon to 2 p.m. Please enter the school at the Church Road entrance.
