Aviator Prepares For An Amazin'Week

The New York Mets Baseball Academy will set up camp at Aviator Sports and Recreation from August 20 to August 24, just on the heels of the of the state-of-the-art facility's first anniversary.

Former and present Mets players will be on site throughout the week to instruct boys and girls, ages 13 and under. The baseball instruction camp is scheduled to take place on Field 2.

Each "training day" consists of six hours of baseball activities, beginning at 8:45 a.m. with warm-up, speed, power and conditioning drills, and concluding with a review of daily instruction. The academy includes hitting, throwing and position play instruction, individual training, pre-game batting practice, and actual games. Cost for the week is $325 for each player and includes daily lunch and autograph sessions with Mets players and coaches. A reduced "half-day" rate of $150 is available.

Kevin Surdi ("Coach K"), the Academy's founder and director of baseball operations, has devoted more than 20 years of experience to Mets camps. He has welcomed former baseball greats Sandy Alomar, George Foster, Ed Kranepool, Felix Millan and Darryl Strawberry to be instructors at past Mets camps. Current members of the National League East Division-leading Mets are expected to make appearances.
