HSBC Plans OK'd By Department Of Buildings
Construction of the new HSBC bank branch in Rockaway Park is expected to begin shortly, now that the city has issued the necessary building permit.
The permit to construct a new building on the property, which is located at 116-11 Beach Channel Drive, was issued August 10 by the Department of Buildings, according to records on file with the agency. Shaw Contracting in Plainview is listed as the contractor.
"HSBC is excited to break ground on the Rockaway branch and looks forward to being part of the local community," said Francine Minadeo, Public Affairs manager for HSBC. The new branch "will feature a full range of financial services, including new accounts, walk up ATM service and drive-through teller services," she added.
An artist's rendering of the building was not immediately available.
Jonathan Gaska, the District Manager of Community Board 14, said he has been periodically monitoring the contractor's progress and now expects work to begin in about two weeks.
The HSBC branch will be located at the former site of the Rockaway Sunset Diner, which was razed during the spring - long after it had deteriorated into a potentially dangerous state. At the time, the owner of the property and a different spokesperson for the bank separately claimed they were not responsible for the building's condition. Municipal holdups were blamed for the delay
