What A Disgrace!

Dear Editor,

Dear Editor,

My blood boiled as I read Congressman Weiner's press release to your newspaper, wherein he proudly stated that once again, he has sent a letter to the President of the United States calling for the release of Jonathan Pollard, an analyst then working in a position of trust for the United States Navy, who is serving a life sentence on espionage charges. By his own admission, Pollard estimates that he sold or gave to Israeli spies operating in the Washington, D.C. area over ONE MILLION PAGES (The EQUIVALENT OF 360 CUBIC FEET) OF CLASSIFIED DOCUMENTS during an eighteen month period in the mid 1980's. For any elected official to demand his release should be stomach-turning to concerned Americans.

I believe that Weiner is currying favor with a small bloc of voters at the possible expense of our national security. I doubt that Weiner would have any concern if Pollard were an Arab- American who sold secrets to Syrian military intelligence. I also don't believe that Weiner's position is supported by the majority of his constituents, and ask that you take the time to call his office to voice your opinion. I ask Weiner, what advantage is there to the United States to release Pollard? I urge Weiner and all concerned to read a book by Ronald J. Olive entitled, Capturing Jonathan Pollard: How One Of The Most Notorious Spies In American History Was Brought To Justice, published by the Naval Institute Press. I renew my offer to Weiner to lend him my copy of this book. Finally, I ask Weiner the next time he is at a religious service with the Israeli General Counsel to the United Nations, instead of pandering to him, demand in public that the Israeli government return to the U.S. the stolen, classified documents.
