Chatting with Chapey

Fay Cohen Memorial Hadassah Heart Luncheon
Commentary by Dr. Geraldine M. Chapey, Democratic District Leader

Dr. Geraldine Chapey Dr. Geraldine Chapey The Hadassah Heart Luncheon has been renamed the Fay Cohen Memorial Heart Luncheon in honor of Fay Cohen - the chairwoman of the luncheon for almost 50 years. Cohen devoted herself to raising funds for heart research and innovation at Hadassah Hospital. "The name Hadassah is synonymous with initiative and innovation, education and excellence, caring and commitment," according to the Hadassah web site. Cohen was dedicated to the Hadassah University Medical Center's creed of building a better world through medicine. She was married to a medical doctor and was a life member of Hadassah. She recognized that by raising funds for this world-class university medical institution, she was helping an institution which has a global reputation for excellence in caring and curing and has distinguished itself through its innovative approaches to complex medical issues. Cohen, the Hadassah members and our community neighbors are a network of volunteers and professionals who are coming together across continents to help people with their medical issues and heart disease.

Cohen had reached out to the entire community to work together on this vital issue. Friends and neighbors from all parts of Queens and New York City worked with her and faithfully attended the Heart Luncheon. She was an important member of our Trinity committee and an integral part of our Trinity family. In 2004, I was very honored and pleased to present Cohen with the Trinity Services Humanitarian Award. Cohen was a woman who distinguished herself with a strong record of community involvement.

This year's luncheon committee consisted of Marilynn Blicksilver, Selma Frank, Renee Freeman, Cathy Goldsmith, Bobby Seiden, and Fay Stahl. My husband- Eugene Pasternak- always calls the numbers at the luncheon for the raffle prizes.

Freeman has been elevated to be the chairperson of the Queens Region of Hadassah. In her new role, she has the opportunity to extend her good work. - She is now a leader on the national level. Freeman is a "people person" who is always there for you. We wish her the best of luck. - She is also a valued member of our Trinity family and was honored at our 2006 luncheon with the Distinguished Service Award. Blicksilver, another Trinity family member, continues her outstanding efforts as the program chairperson for Hadassah meetings. Her energetic and effervescent style radiate cheerfulness, friendliness and competence.

Nadia Murphy was the community honoree at the Hadassah luncheon. Murphy is an exemplary member of the Garden Club. The garden clubs have done an outstanding job in beautifying our area. Peggy De Matteis and Margaret Mc Carthy, the presidents of the local garden clubs, were at the luncheon and praised Murphy's wonderful work. They also fondly remembered that Fay Cohen had served as President of the Garden Club. This work was very close to her heart. Cohen was very fond of Murphy and had complimented her endeavors. Murphy has also been working diligently with the beautification of Tribute Park.

Cohen's family was proud to be in attendance at the luncheon. Her daughter Patti spoke of her mother's outgoing personality and her devotion to her family and to the Hadassah Heart Luncheon. Her daughter Susan lovingly repeated the words of her mother: "Thank you for attending this year's luncheon and I look forward to seeing you here next year". I hope that next year you will join us at this important event and help in the efforts to raise funds for heart research.

On the political front, I was very pleased to attend the first Congressman Thomas J. Manton Queens County Democratic Golf Outing at the Inwood Country Club. It's always wonderful to get a chance to chat with New York State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, Senate Democratic Minority Leader Malcolm Smith, New York City Comptroller Bill Thompson and our own Queens County District Attorney Richard Brown. We also had the opportunity to greet our own Assemblywoman Audrey Pheffer, Assemblywoman Michele Titus, Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan, Assemblywoman Nettie Meyerson and City Councilwoman Helen Sears. Members of the New York State Senate, Toby Stavisky and John Sabini, were also making the rounds. We are always privileged to be in the company of our great county leader, Congressman Joseph Crowley. Judge Timothy Dufficy and his beautiful and capable daughter Doreen were also on hand. Agreat time was had by all.

Happy birthday to a truly great lady - Evelyn Weber. Thanks for inviting us to join you at your wonderful birthday bash. It included every type of delicious pastry on the planet.

May you enjoy many more years of prosperity.
