SFDS Summer Classic Enters Stretch Run
The 23rd annual St. Francis Summer Classic is entering the stretch run with the regular season over as of Wednesday, July 25 and playoffs beginning this week in many of the divisions.
Heading into the final night, Rockaway Little League and the Cougars sit atop the Boys Grammar Middle division with 6-2 records. Little League will draw the top seed based on tiebreakers. There is a mad scramble for fourth through eight place with the Orangemen currently fourth at 4-3 and J.G. Electrical Installations in eight at 3-4. Tiebreakers will be needed to sort things out after the final two games are played.
The first round of the playoffs will be held on Monday, July 30, with quarterfinals Tuesday July 31. The semifinals will be held on Wednesday August 1 and the championship games will be played on Wednesday August 8 at 7:00 p.m.
The picture in Boys Grammar Senior is clearer. Baily's Construction is undefeated and will grab the top seed. On The Rocks Liquors is second at 7-1. Monday's first round games have Lawrence Pharmacy or VIP Sprinklers playing Belle Harbor Yacht Club and Rockaway Rotary against Snug Harbour. The winners of those games will go against Baily's and On The Rocks on Tuesday. The other quarterfinals are McManus Plumbing against Lawrence or VIP and Caucig Utilities against Coastal Real Estate. Semifinals are Tuesday August 7 and the championship is Wednesday August 8 at 8:15 p.m The Boys High School division finished on July 24 and first round matchups on July 25 was as follows-: Wharf-Ridgewood Savings Bank and Treiber Roberts- Breezy Point Lumber. Quarterfinals are Wednesday August 1 with top seed Jameson's taking on the Treiber-Lumber winner and R. Tyne Painting facing the Wharf or Ridgewood. Other games include; Dr. Schilling's POD's- Sands Point Physical Therapy and Graybeards-Rockaway Seafood Company. Semifinals are Monday, August 6 and the championship game is Wednesday August 8 at 8:15 p.m.
The Girls Grammar Senior is like the Boys Grammar middle with only first place Cross County Savings Bank and seventh place Kimball Construction set, going into the final night of play. The other five teams sport records of 4- 3 or 3-4. Cross County draws a bye while quarterfinals for all others will be Monday July 30. Semifinals are Monday August 6 and the championship is Wednesday August 8 at 7:00 p.m. The Boys Grammar Junior and Girls Grammar Junior divisions do not have playoffs and head into their final week of play. The second grade also does not have playoffs but will continue until August 7 in the school gym.
The Women's Open A and B division championships will be this Tuesday, July 31 in the gym. The Men's Open is starting to catch up after rain postponed play on many nights. Playoffs will begin on August 9. The Graybeards championship will be Thursday August 2 after semifinals on July 26. The Girls High School division will begin on August 6.
