Movies Return To Rockaway With 'Happy Feet'
For one night this summer, the silver screen will be returning to Rockaway as New York City's Department of Parks and Recreation presents the Academy Award winning movie "Happy Feet" during Movie Night on the Beach on the first Sunday in August.
The event, which is being sponsored by Arverne East, will take place at O'Donohue Park on Beach 17 Street and includes pre-movie entertainment by the Les Paultre group.
"Rockaway hasn't had a movie theater in years. Here's a chance to get outside and enjoy a great film on a beautiful summer night," reads a Parks Department press release.
Rockaway was once home to five movie theaters - three in Far Rockaway, one in Rockaway Beach and another in Rockaway Park. The Pix in Far Rockaway was the last to close in the 1970's. Among the closest theaters for area residents to see the latest films are two theaters in Green Acres, or the Jamaica Multiplex on 159 Street in Jamaica or several in Brooklyn.
The movie is free, and all anyone needs to bring is a blanket or beach chair. The film is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
"There is no scheduled rain date, but in the case that it does rain, we would schedule another date," said Abigail Lootens, a spokesperson for Parks.
The special movie night, on August 5, is just one of several events hosted in Rockaway this summer by the city's Parks Department. Other events include exercise classes on Tuesday mornings and Thursday mornings at Beach 17 Street and Beach 116 Street respectively, Urban Park Rangers Beach Events on various days during the week and a Sandcastle Contest on Beach 119 Street on July 29.
