Laurence Pump Clinches Rockaway Little League Playoff Spot
The girls of Laurence Pump and Well completed the second half of their Rockaway Little League season, with three wins and one loss. The victories helped the team clinch second place in the Major Girls' softball division.
In their first playoff game, Laurence was pitted against third place Frank's Carpentry on June 24. Frank's scored three runs in the third inning on two walks, three singles and a double. They were held scoreless in the first, second and fourth innings.
Laurence was all "pumped-up" during the first four innings by scoring ten runs on four walks, five singles, a double and a grand slam homer by Erin Tacopina.
Laurence got plenty of runs from the following players: Cody Dripchak (who also had superb steals), Marissa Scotto, Kyra Meli, Becky Resner, Cat Murphy, Judith Wanderer, Kristen Lonnborg, Caroline Nee and Ashley Basta. On defense, Becka O'Connor covered first base like a champ but she wasn't the only teammate to perform well. O'Connor's teammates Meli, Scotto, Resner and Murphy did well in the field. Laurence won the game, 11-5, in five and a half innings. Coaches Bill Murphy, Elaine Scotto and the terrific team of 'gals', deserve credit for playing a very good game.
The team encountered some tough but exciting contests in the regular season to make the playoffs.
Their game on May 11 against Walsh Properties was a "slug-fest" and a nail biter. The girls on both teams combined to rack up 31 runs in the game. Meli hit the winning RBI single as Resner scored in the bottom of the sixth, for a 16-15 win.
The May 20 game against Caiazzo Plumbing got off to a slow start with no score during the first two innings. Both teams' bats began to perk up. Laurence took an early lead but Caiazzo came back in the top of the fifth to tie the score at 3-3. The bottom of the fifth saw the bottom drop out for Caiazzo.
Laurence began their onslaught as Becky Resner smacked an inside the park home run. The team followed with seven runs on five singles due to the hitting of Scotto, Meli, O'Connor, Julia Falcone, Caroline Nee, and Murphy, all scoring with "heads-up" base running. Laurence Pump won the game, 10-3.
Laurence bounced back from their defeat to Gift is Love on June 2, with a 10-4 win over Frank's Carpentry on June 3. 'Murphy scored 3 runs, Meli hit a three-run homer, Resner knocked in a 2 RBI double and Nee's hit an RBI triple for Laurence.
Laurence recorded a 16-1 victory over FLynn and Flynn which set up the final hurdle to the playoffs, which pitted the team against Walsh Properties on June 14. O'Shea and Basta led the Laurence line-up by scoring four runs on four hits.
Pitcher Cat Murphy gave up only six runs on two hits in four innings as Laurence took a 21-6 victory and clinched second place.
