Shevlin and a friend outside of Jamison's with a sign wishing him good luck on his ride. The Wave will print excerpts from Shevlin's on-line notes as he crosses the nation. The Cystic Fibrosis Fund was one of the participants in the fundraiser. Shevlin was set to begin his ride right after the Friday night fundraiser. Motorcycles line up outside of Jameson's Pub on Beach 129 Street on Friday night for a kick-off fundraiser for Ed "Shevy" Shevlin, a Department of Sanitation worker who is riding his motorcycle from Rockaway Beach, New York to Rockaway Beach, Oregon. "Shevy" is making his transcontinental run in order to raise awareness about Cystic Fibrosis and the plight of baby Anthony Smith, who has the disease and whose father, SFC Erick Smith will soon begin his second deployment to Iraq. Shevlin poses with Police Officer Joe Roberts, a Community Affairs Officer with the 100 Precinct, who was set to escort Shevlin to the city line.
