Local Dedicates Summer To Service
Christina Fulmore of Rockaway Beach has been selected from a pool of over 300 applicants to serve in the Bronx office of National Student Partnerships (NSP) through AmeriCorps National Direct. Fulmore will spend her summer helping people stabilize their lives by assisting them in finding jobs, housing, child care, transportation coverage and healthcare, while managing an office and student leadership team.
"After an amazing experience volunteering with NSP during the school year in their Pittsburgh office, I decided service as a Summer Director would be a great way to continue my service," Fulmore explained. "The first weeks have been great. The clients were very receptive, as were my fellow Summer Director and Site Coordinator." She also noted that she is excited to take off on a new, creative adventure with NSP and dig deeper into the issues faced by low-income Bronx communities.
Fulmore will graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 2010. After this summer, she will return to the college for her sophomore year.
National Student Partnerships was founded by college undergraduates in 1998, and operates a national network of resource centers, staffed by student volunteers from area colleges and universities.
The students work one-on-one with low-income community members, providing intensive on-site and referral services that enable clients to pursue long term career and life goals. Since its founding, NSP has grown to 12 communities across the country, which besides the Bronx, include Baltimore, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C. and North Philadelphia.
