John Duddy returns to Ireland on July 15 for his first professional boxing fight since leaving his hometown, Derry County, a few years ago to seek fame and fortune in the United States. Fort Tilden, NY- Last Friday night, thirty-six neighborhood men took to their field of dreams to relive the glory days. Participating players brushed 15-20 years of dust off their softball equipment, stretched out whatever muscles were working, donned a team hat and took their last little league positions on the diamond. The Rockaway Theatre Company production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific opened last weekend and the first three performances were met with rave reviews and standing ovations from "sell out" capacity crowds. Before the season started, Cyclones pitcher Dylan Owen looked like the odd-man-out in the starting rotation, with Joseph Leaper, Nick Carr and Tim Stronach more than likely to get most of the attention from the media and scouts. More ... This summer, New York City youngsters will be able to enjoy double dutch, nok hockey and basketball as part of the Police Athletic League's Summer Play Street Program. The PAL kicked off its 2007 summer program on July 2. Services will be available Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., throughout the summer. More ... The New York Junior Tennis League initiated their free summer program that will provide free instructions for youth who want to pick up a racket for the first time, or refine their game. The NYJTL will conduct the program at both Beach Channel High School and Bayswater Park for boys and girls from the ages of 5 through 17 years. More ... The Big Apple Games is a free summer recreational program at Beach Channel High School that will give schoolchildren the opportunity to take part in a number of recreational activities during the summer months. The New York City Department of Education and the Public School Athletic League will sponsor the free program, which began on July 9 and ends on August 17. More ... The Broad Channel Athletic Club will be holding football and cheerleading registration for the 2007 season on July 14. Registration will be held at the BCAC Memorial Field on 1st Road in Broad Channel from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sign up will be for children ages 5 through 14 years old. Bishop Kearney High School students Kerri Gallagher (left) and Marissa Maffei (right) received college scholarships at the 6th annual Metro Sports Med Scholar Athlete Awards Luncheon at Keyspan Park. The scholarships are awarded annually to Brooklyn high school seniors that excel athletically and academically. Gallagher will be attending Fordham University and Maffei will be attending Drew University in the fall. More ... In the Bantam Division (9-12 year old), the New York Yankees defeated the Cincinnati Reds, 16-3, in the first game held at 9:30 a.m. More ... The Rockaway Ravens cheerleading squad, "The Lady Ravens", is asking for more cheerleaders and coaches to help motivate and inspire the Rockaway Ravens football team. The Rockaway Ravens are looking for dedicated and highly spirited young ladies, between the ages of 5 and 14, to participate and cheer for the Lady Ravens. More ... Once again, the skies opened up and rain poured out which lead to a full cancellation of week six in the Rockaway Beach Volleyball League. The timing of the storm could not have been worse, striking the peninsula just as the parking lot was filled with anxious volleyball players. More ... |
