Because of several recent violent events at Beach 116 Street, there was a visible emergency response team present at the beach last weekend. The police were represented by one of the organization's Mobile Command Posts parked at the southern end of the street all weekend, joined by a number of radio motor patrol cars that were ready for action if needed. A police officer is regularly stationed on a lifeguard stand on the boardwalk at Beach 116 Street to make it easier to monitor the beach from a high vantage point. Two ambulances staffed with EMT's, and a city bus sit on the shopping street. City buses such as that one are often used to transport large groups of arrestees to central booking. Two Parks Enforcement Police Officers speak with a beach supervisor on the boardwalk. Lifeguards were in place on Beach 116 Street over the weekend. That beach is one of the few in Rockaway that is not closed at any time by the lifeguard shortage because it is a major transportation hub.
