RIBS Golf Outing Set For July 6

The Rockaway Irish Boys' ("RIBS") Fourth Annual Charity Golf Outing will be held on July 6, at Jacob Riis Park Pitch and Putt Golf Course in Rockaway Beach, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The RIBS Golf Outing is dedicated in loving memory to Charlie Heeran, Chris Lawler and Michael Glover. Charlie, Chris and Mike were lifelong friends who were tremendous supporters of the neighborhood and dedicated to improving the quality of life in Rockaway.

The RIBS are a group of childhood friends who cultivated their relationship in the St. Francis de Sales schoolyard and the beaches of Rockaway. They remained close through college and their professional lives, and many have returned to purchase homes and apartments in the Rockaway area to raise their own families.

Two of the RIBS most cheerful and influential friends, Charlie Heeran and Chris Lawler, passed away in 2001 in separate tragic incidents - 9/11 and the Flight 587 plane crash in Rockaway on November 12.

This past year was a difficult one for the RIBS as one of their members and close friends, Lance Corporal Michael Glover, lost his life on August 16, 2006 while conducting a combat mission in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Michael went above and beyond the call of duty by joining the Marine reserves to support a cause he felt strongly about. After completing his first year of law school, Glover traveled to Iraq to fight for our freedom. His patriotism and dedication to our country serves as inspiration to us all. The RIBS strive to make a small contribution to the Rockaway community, in particular those in dire need, in memory of Chris, Charlie, and Michael, all of whom provided an example of serving their communities and helping those around them in their too-short lives.

The goal for the RIBS Golf Outing is to raise money for people in the Rockaways in need of community assistance. The proceeds from the Golf Outing have helped dozens of Rockaway residents and people close to the community in the past three years. In addition to the Golf Outing, the RIBS conduct an annual food drive during the season of Thanksgiving, where they have donated thousands of pounds of food to various food kitchens throughout the peninsula. Finally, the RIBS co-hosted with Rockaway Wish for the First Annual "Treats with Santa" event this past December, where children of all ages were able to have their picture taken with Santa Claus. In order for the RIBS to continue to help people in need and carry on the legacy of Charlie, Chris and Michael, we need the support of the entire community.

The RIBS invite everyone to be a part of this special day. The cost is only $75, which includes a round of golf and an all-day BBQ. It is sure to be a great day. The RIBS goal for the 2007 Golf Outing is to raise money for people in the Rockaway community and to fund a high school scholarship for a deserving local student who would benefit from financial assistance.
