Down For The Summer

Down For The Summer

News Events/Travel Editor/Host + WNYX - TV Morning News + 12:00 noon on UHF Chs. 35 & 26 Monday - Friday

Look around and you can see some of the boarded up homes are opening their doors to welcome a new summer season. Helene and Peter Danzilo are here for the summer. They just returned from their home in Las Vegas and they are very happy to be here. Helene had heart failure while she was away and Peter wasn't well either. They are home in Breezy now and well on their way to recovery. They dined at Kennedy's this Saturday and asked me to join them. No need for an NYC restaurant when Kennedy's is here. And, the portions are so enormous you can feed two for one. Need I tell you, flavors and service are hard to find anywhere else. Peter is back on time to celebrate another birthday on June 29. Congratulations!

Frank and Joan McNally celebrated 50 years of wedded bliss on July 18 at the Catholic Club. Congratulations! Peggy Keeley will be up from Florida on June 28 with Elly Connolly and Peg's sister, Pat Gilhooley.

Met Peggy Ansbro outside of Church and she said to me, "Dorothy, you look so well!" I told you about Dr. Mattone, the founder of Invisilift and if you want to know more email me at dorothydunne@yahoo.com. You should see me now!

LEGALLY BRONZE.....Janet's Studio "J" has a new hair technician, Morsy. He only uses the top high tech equipment. He did a reconstruction job on me that will make your jaw drop when you see me. You know as you get older the gray appears in your hair. You then color it "blonde," but it is too, too, light and so aging. Thanks to Morsy, who not only gave me a beautiful bronze color to take off the years, but cut and styled my hair so that I look and feel like a new person. Everyone loves my new look and you can have it, too. He is right at Studio "J" and ready to take care of you. Believe me, he is sensational!

IT PAYS TO CLEAN UP THE BEACH......The Surfrider Foundation got together with Barefoot Wines and treated the "cleanup committee" (those who volunteered to cleanup to clean up Beach 90 Street beaches) with a smashing evening of FREE WINE and food and live band on the deck of Pier 92, an ideal place to see the sun set and sip delicious wine and fill your tummy with overflowing food from the buffet. A great idea. They should have it annually. The Rockaway beaches will be immaculate!

Eileen and Lou Brush made their annual run to the Sugar Bowl recently. Charlie and Marguerite Hughes along with Kevin Connolly are very neighborly, "Good Samaritans" and so willing to lend a hand in need. Thank you for your help. Charlie Hughes, Louis Brush and Kevin Connolly, the "Three Musketeers" have known each other for 40 years. Now that's a friendship! And, thank you, Marguerite, for the nutritional package you sent to me. It was delicious.

Is it just talk, but on the serious side, are the Breezy Stores are on their way out??? It can't be. Let you know and as soon as I hear, it will be announced in my column. And, what about the Ferry? It is an ideal way of getting to NYC in about 20 pleasant minutes. I took it years ago and it was great! Let's bring it back.

Prayers for Dolores Lang of 10th Avenue, who spent 10 days in Peninsula General Hospital in the CCU Unit and received excellent care from Betty Butler, Eileen McMulland and Karen Barson at North Shore Rehab. Dolores is the mother of Therese Tully. Therese and husband, Gary Tulley, are traveling to Ireland this summer with 34 of their friends to visit the Ring of Kerry, Westport and Killarney. They should all have a terrific time! And, thank you, Therese for your kind lift to Sheepshead Bay. I got to NYC just in time to make the delicious Vodka and Gin Fest at Valvella Restaurant at 421 W. 13 th St. The Silk Vodka stands out because it was as smooth as silk. But, they were all good. The more I sipped the better they got. And accompanied by oh so yummy snacks that were provided by the restaurant made for a pleasant sip and snack evening.

Anguilla had a fabulous evening at the Pierre Hotel where they held a dinner presentation to tell us all about their small, but very beautiful island. It is just a hop, skip and a jump away from our shores and with great summer deals.

At the Rainbow Room, Quebec told guests about their enormous construction going on and that the USA should look for investments in that area. They also spoke about the World Trade in Montreal and how well it is going.

While at the Roosevelt Hotel we saw a preview of the Puerto Rican Day parade with an entertaining dinner of music and masked dancing. Very festive indeed. The coastal plain of Puerto Rico is 116 square miles, with clear skies and sun most of the year. It is a great place to vacation, with museums and castles to visit and open air activities.

I was in the city for the start of Restaurant Week, at the "Top Chef's" lunch in Union Square, where Tom Collicchio was there. He would get my vote for Top Chef (I have never had such an outstanding meal as I had at the CRAFT Restaurant's private dining room for the Oregon Wine tasting). I met Camille Becerra who appears on Bravo TV and is the owner of the Palma Restaurant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Have you tried it? The TOP CHEF chosen today for his Soft Shell Crabs was Ilan. Congratulations!

At Cipriani's on 23rd St., the province of Biella, Italy, where they have medieval villages, valleys, holy places and nature parks, was celebrated. You can climb and ski the snow-covered mountains. And, the food and wine are exceptionally good.

If you like Texas fare you will love the Hill Country Restaurant where they have ribs and brisket, Austin, Texas wine and authentic Texas music where you can dance your feet off every Thursday from 9 p.m. to 12 a.m. and Friday and Saturdays 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.. That's at 30 West 26th St. No Cover. Great BBQ, fun place.

Dr. Aaron Tabor's new book, the revival of "Slim and Beautiful Diets," was launched at a reception at Bruno Jamais Restaurant at East 81st St., NYC. It helps you lose weight inside and out, improve the appearance of skin and hair and nails.

Roseland Ballroom was the site of "Share Our Strength: Taste of the Nation" fundraiser for the hungry children in America. Twelve million hungry children will now have access to nutritional food because of this event.

The Caribbean Festival is going on at the South Street Seaport and I took a spin around New York City in the Zephyr Cruise Ship sponsored by Antigua and Barbuda. It was a Caribbean blast! Island music and dancing with tropical food were ample.

I will try to keep you up with the doings around our city and the Rockaways so you don't feel you missed a thing.
