The Inner Voice

Commentary by Marilyn Gelfand

Expect the unexpected, and then you'll always be prepared for change.

We can make all our plans and wait for those of others to unfold, but there will always be something occurring that wasn't in the original design.

Sometimes when we have the quiet moments when nothing major is shaking us up, we can sit back and enjoy them knowing that the opposite is bound to happen.

It is the unexpected that gives meaning to the quiet still moments.

For example, our gardens are all blooming now.

It is great to see all the colors and enjoy them because they won't be here next week.

We have the ability to appreciate when things are good, going along as planned, with a good sense of wisdom that this is a special moment just because nothing messed it up.

There's no reason to ever feel bored if you are truly paying attention to your life and its surroundings.

When the unexpected happens, we have to say okay and accept it as quickly as possible without resistance. That lack of awareness just creates suffering for ourselves. Without the complaints, we can deal easier with what must be done, and realize maybe something good can come of this or I can minimize the effect by taking a specific action.

"This is what always happens" or "It adds spice to our lives," are some good thoughts to help us remain a bit detached from our circumstances so we can evaluate them easier.

Humor at life and its changes helps too.

The more we keep in mind that life is meant to have storms, and we are not supposed to get everything we want, the easier it is to navigate our way through life.
