Breezy Point Biathlon Run Raises Funds For Scholarship

Registration is now taking place for the third annual Breezy Point Biathlon on July 7. The event will raise funds for a high school scholarship which will award children for their excellence in academics, athletics and community service.

The Breezy Point Biathlon Run will be a 1.5 mile run, a 3 mile bike run and a 0.35 mile run that will start from the Sugarbowl in Breezy Point, starting at 10 a.m.

Awards will be given to first place finishers in each age group and sneakers given to the top three male and female overall winners. A $50 bonus will be given to males and females who complete the course under the record time (males-19:56 and females 23:20).

The race will honor the memory of Bill Mullaly, a local philanthropist and former resident of Breezy Point who passed away on November 3, 2006. Mullaly contributed much of his time to different organizations throughout Breezy Point and donated his time to helping young children.

In his memory, funds will be raised for the Bill Mullaly High School Scholarship Fund. It will be awarded to children who attend catholic grammar schools from Breezy Point who excel in academics, athletics and community service contributions.

On June 16, at 10 a.m. at the St. Thomas More Rectory, there will be an essay examination for those children who would like to apply for the scholarship. Applicants are expected to bring a pen, a recent copy of their report card and a list of contacts for the community service he or she provides.

There will be a $20 fee to race which includes a t-shirt, awards and a post race party. Registration will be $25 on the day of the race. The post-race party and awards ceremony will be held at the Sugar Bowl with food, DJ and beverages.

Bikes must be dropped off on the day of the race at the field adjacent to the Reid Parking Lot South. T-shirts and numbers can be picked up at the Sugarbowl on the day of the race between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m.

The first 150 people to register will receive a t-shirt. Applicants can mail their checks payable to the Knights of Columbus to Ryan Woerner, 38 Beach 219 Street, Breezy Point, NY 11697. For more information, call Woerner at 718-757-4669.
