Wave Editor Visits Offices Of Mexican Newspaper

Wave editor Brian Magoolaghan, who is visiting Mexico for a month as part of a Rotary International program, spent some time in recent days with the owners and editors of the Mexican newspaper, Cambio Sonora. Sonora, one of Mexico's states, is in the northwestern portion of the nation near the Arizona border. Magoolaghan's visit came after an April 17 attack on the newspaper's office, reportedly by drug traffickers who tossed two hand grenades at the building where the paper is housed. No injuries resulted, but there was property damage. The paper's Director, Roberto Gutierrez (right), told Magoolaghan that he was not sure why the paper was the target, but that he considered it "a message directed against the entire media." The grenade explosion followed almost immediately after a silent march staged by 30 journalists in Hermosillo, the state's capital city, to protest attacks on journalists, including the kidnapping of a journalist in a nearby city. Magoolaghan, right, met for more than an hour with Gutierrez and some of his top editors. He will be back at his desk at The Wave in time for the June 16 issue of The Wave.Wave editor Brian Magoolaghan, who is visiting Mexico for a month as part of a Rotary International program, spent some time in recent days with the owners and editors of the Mexican newspaper, Cambio Sonora.
