Wave Editor Participates In Educational Forum

Queens Civic Conference Hosts 'The State of Public Education'

It is not often that a journalist gets to provide his or her opinion on important issues outside of the pages of the newspaper, but Wave Managing Editor Howard Schwach got just such a chance last Monday when the Queens Civic Conference, an umbrella group for all of the civic groups in the borough, hosted an educational forum. For more than two hours, the five panelists covered such issues as school governance, high-stakes testing, parental involvement and funding. They also answered lots of questions from the moderator, Edwin O'Keefe Westley as well as the large audience. Pictured, the five-member panel. From left, they are Walter Sanchez, the publisher and owner of the Ledger/Star Newspapers, Colin Gufstason, the education beat reporter for the Queens Chronicle, Schwach, Lee Landor from the Queens Tribune and a parent member of the District 26 Community Education Council. Schwach was a teacher and staff developer for more than 30 years and has covered education in Rockaway since 1985.
